This site is about my branch of the Marsland Family.  My name is David Marsland and I reside in Australia. I am a descendant of John Marsland who was born in November 1821 at Sale, in the County of Chester, now part of Greater Manchester, in the United Kingdom. John was the son of John Marsland who was born in 1790 in Motley, Cheshire, England, and married Mary Clare at Manchester Cathedral on 28th July 1812. Mary was born in 1796. They had 6 children: Thomas 1813, Hannah (Anne) 1815, Peter 1817, James 1819, John 1821 and Charles 1824. The 5th child John, married Agnes Farrell at Collis Parish Church, Manchester on 4th September1842. Shortly after they were married John and Agnes moved to Hulme, where John was employed as a police officer. On the25th October 1844, John joined the 12th Suffolk Regiment at Foot at Westminster, Middlesex. On May 29 1854 the regiment arrived at Hobart Town, Tasmania, Australia on board the ship "Gloucester". John was accompanied by his wife and family. John served in various parts of Australia before his discharge in England on the 7th of August 1866.

John and Agnes had 8 children , 6 of whom reached adulthood. Three of the boys settled in Australia - James Abel, Charles Alfred and Edward. The other two boys William Henry and John Thomas, and their sister Agnes, returned to England. Emma died at two yeas of age in Sydney and is buried at St Judes cemetery in Randwick. There was another son listed on documents as 'boy deceased', at the moment we have no information on him.

My thanks must go to Alison Sutherland who without much of this information would not be available. Alison spent hundreds of hours researching the family before the advent of the internet. Also thanks to Denis and Kathleen Marsland in the UK who I discovered by chance via their son on the internet. Thanks also to Margaret Malvern in the UK and Linda Michelini in the USA
